Harry Street (Gregory Peck) is an author who got seriously wounded in an African hunting accident, and it seemed like he had only few hours in hand to live. Harry recalls how much he aspired to be a great American novelist, though he only turned out to be a money making person. Harry also recalls his only true love, Cynthia Green (Ava Gardner), whom he had lost due to his workaholic nature. Though Harry has been a successful author, he feels he has wasted his talent to ensure success of his novels. Harry, who sees himself as a failure in life, spends his moments of pain with his wife Helen (Susan Hayward) and awaits his surprising fate.
